Developmental Assessments

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

Developmental assessments are used to gain information about a child’s qualities and abilities either through direct measurement, such as exam administration, or observations of developmental skills (crawling, walking). There are two primary types of assessments: norm-referenced and criterion-referenced. Warm Heart Parenting currently offers the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 and the Hawaii Early Learning Profile (HELP) 0-3 and 3-6. These tools allow us to identify your child’s unique strengths and challenges and provide you with invaluable information about your child’s development.

Norm-referenced assessments compare an individual child's performance to that of other same-age children. The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 is a norm-referenced tool and measures interrelated motor abilities of children from birth through age 5 years. The PDMS-2 assesses gross and fine motor skills by assessing primitive reflexes, balance, gross movement patterns, object manipulation, grasping and visual-motor integration.

The HELP 0-3 and 3-6 is a “widely-used, family-centered, curriculum-based assessment for use by professionals working with infants, toddlers, and young children, and their families. As a curriculum-based assessment, HELP (0-3/3-6) is not standardized: it is used for identifying needs, tracking growth and development, and determining ‘next steps’” (VORT Corporation 2022). The HELP looks at all developmental domains including: cognitive, language, gross Motor, fine Motor, social-Emotional, and self-Help skills. Criterion-referenced assessments measure children's skills or knowledge in comparison to standards based on expectations but do not necessarily compare individual scores with an age-based average or norm.

There are times when I may adapt or modify an item due to the individual child’s presentation. You are a valuable part of the assessment process and I include a lengthy intake process to gather relevant information prior to conducting an assessment with your child.

Hi, I'm a pediatric physical therapy and parent support clinician. I help families with children aged 0-5 years old by providing developmentally appropriate and skilled care. My

goal is to make sure each child has the best possible start in life and that each family feels supported. I work closely with parents to provide individualized care plans tailored to their child's needs, while also helping them gain skills and confidence as parents. I love working with families and young

children and watching them grow and develop!
